Quotes

There’s a lot of information out there about The 4400 in general, so instead of repeating that, I’ve attempted to gather what references to Richard and Marco I could find from other cast and crew members. I hope you enjoy!

Jacqui McKenzie, who plays Diana Skouris, has nothing but good things to say about Richard. In one of the videos available for fans to watch at the4400.com (though this particular video appears to have disappeared at the moment!), she called him “a dream” to work with because he always has something going on behind his eyes, and he’s always really there while he’s acting with you.

In an interview Jacqui does with SFX Magazine in their November 2006 issue, the conversation turns to Richard and the Marco/Diana relationship:

“Diana Skouris’s story will offer more than its share of surprises in The 4400‘s third season. But McKenzie says her character’s relationship with Marco, NTAC’s resident science nerd, continues.

“I love Marco,” she beams, “he’s a great character. And I love the fact that he is with Diana. I think it’s the strangest, sweetest, quirkiest kind of relationship. She listens to him, and I guess she doesn’t feel threatened by him. He’s just a very sweet-souled geek. I like that they’re together. But it’s funny what they start out with inthe scripts when you start the season and what you wind up with. For instance, they had written in the pilot of the second season, ‘Diana wakes up next to Marco.’ I thought, ‘What? Diana and Marco? What the hell’s that?’ And then they decided to cut that. So it took all season then, us both knowing – Richard Kahan, the actor – that that was the direction they had originally wanted to take. Every time we got a script, we were waiting for that to reappear, and it didn’t quite, until the kiss in the kitchen at the very end of the season. Yes, that has developed further, and we’re in the process of seeing where that goes right now, actually, in this episode ['The Starzl Mutation'] we’re shooting today.”

A quote from the commentary for “As Fate Would Have It” on the season two (region one only) DVD set:

Jacqui: And Marco!
Ira: Here we are in the Theory – is this the Theory Room? We’re in the Theory Room. You know why we have the Theory Room, right? The Powers-That-Be kept asking us to have Tom and Diana explain and theorize what’s going on with whatever case they’re on that week. And no matter how many scenes we wrote, they’d always come back and go ‘Can’t you just find a moment where they just stop and kind of like, sum up what’s been going on and kinda theorize what they think’s happening?’
Jacqui: Wow.
Ira: And it was like, it became very difficult, and so one day we just looked at each other and go ‘They want theory? We’ll give ‘em theory!’ So we wrote this whole Theory Room, y’know, where the rubber meets the road and created this character of Marco and Maira Suro, the Executive Producer, read it and said ‘Oh, they’re not gonna like it, you’re taking the piss out of them by doing it this way!’ And we said ‘No no, I think you cannot give enough theorizing on The 4400, and sure enough, they loved it, and now it’s a permanent setting.
Jacqui: And we’ve got the wonderful Marco.
Ira: Richard Kahan
Joel: The wonderful Richard Kahan.

And a couple of quotes from the commentary for “The Fifth Page”.

(Talking about Jeffrey Combs, and the fact that he does a lot of theatre.)
Jacqui: He totally understands function of character and all that kind of stuff. He’s not just coming in and trying to do a star turn, and…
Joel: And he loves it. I mean, not like that Richard Kahan! *laughs loudly*
Jacqui: Richard does a lot of theatre, too. I love that about the actors we get, they are all about the script and they understand on what level they’re working as actors and characters.

Ira: He came in – his audition – he had this kind of Quentin Tarantino-
Jacqui: Marco – Richard?
Ira: Marco, Richard- where he came in and he was just so- he played it like “I am so smart and I have to lecture you because my enthusiasm – I have to make you understand this thing,” and it was just lovely, he was, uh, we were worried about finding someone because we knew we’d keep bringing this character back if he scored, and it took us a while to find him but he did it really well.
Joel: Yeah, he is fantastic.

Joel: So many people have come up to me and said “What is your problem with Marco?!” I’ve gotten that several times! Like, “I used to like your character, I hate you! What are you doing to Marco?!”
Jacqui: I actually saw that today, in a scene when we’re asking him – and you hit him in the middle of something, and he kind of does a double take. And it’s like – why did he hit him? Yeah, why DID he hit him?!
Joel: Well, I think Tom doesn’t want to spend any time, he wants to get going, and Marco’s thinking things out, and it’s more of a frustration. From an actor’s standpoint, I mean Richard’s just a great person to bounce things off of. You know, we talk about these things. But yeah, I didn’t realise to the degree…!
Ira: I think actually one of the things I was thinking about in season three, because of what you guys’ve gone through and he was one of the few guys, people you could trust, you know, in these last two episodes, I think we do have to modulate your relationship with Marco.
Joel: Absolutely!
Ira: It’s funny that you brought it up because that’s one of the things I was thinking of. He has earned his-
Jacqui & Joel: Yeah, now he has!
